BLACKPINK Rosé’s Chart Performance Fails To Impress Koreans

BLACKPINK’s Rosé made a highly anticipated comeback with her debut studio album Rosie on December 6, featuring the single “Toxic Till The End.”

The album consists of 12 tracks showcasing a blend of 90s R&B, shimmering synthpop, and emotional ballads. The lyrics delve into her personal experiences of excitement, heartbreak, and the struggles of fame in her early twenties.

Prior to the album’s release, Rosé released the first single, “APT,” on October 18 — a collaboration with Bruno Mars. The song became an instant hit and saw massive worldwide success. It topped the Billboard Global 200 and various international charts, including South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. It also landed in the top ten in the U.S. and UK, solidifying its appeal in such big markets.

Despite the massive success of “Apt.,” Rosé’s follow-up single, “Toxic Till The End,” hasn’t matched expectations, particularly in South Korea. While it managed to chart globally on Spotify, including #24 on the Global chart with over 3.8 million streams and #100 in the U.S. with nearly 600,000 streams, Korean fans appear unimpressed.

A post on the popular online forum Pann discussing the song’s achievements gained traction but drew critical comments from netizens. Many pointed out the perceived reliance on Bruno Mars for the success of “Apt.” and the lackluster results of her latest release.

Critics have also noted that even with her U.S. tour and extensive promotion, Rosé’s performance fell short of the high expectations set by BLACKPINK’s global dominance.

  • “Bruno Mars carried the whole thing.”
  • “If it weren’t for APT, it would’ve been an even bigger flop…”
  • “I heard 310,000 copies were sold on the first day, but 290,000 of those were from Chinese bulk buying. LOL. Seriously, are there no fans in Korea?”
  • “But seriously, considering APT ‘exploded’ and she toured the U.S. actively like a local artist… it’s still below expectations, isn’t it?”
  • “Can’t sell albums, streaming is low, even mentioning her boyfriend doesn’t get any reaction. What can you do?”
